Red-cockaded Woodpecker

Red-cockaded Woodpecker

16" x 20" oil on stretched canvas with satin varnish finish. Hand signed and dated on the back.

This painting is part of the series titled Endangered Flora and Fauna. With this series, Silver hopes to highlight the beauty and importance of each endangered species.

This painting features the Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis), which is an endangered species that can be found sparingly across southeastern mature pine forests in the US. These rare birds were listed as endangered in 1979, declining from over 1 million groups to less than 4,000 widely scattered groups. Their decline is due to a near complete loss of habitat, which began during European colonization and continues with ever increasing human development. Red-cockaded woodpeckers play a vital role in their food web!
