This painting is part of the series titled Endangered Flora and Fauna. With this series, Silver hopes to highlight the beauty and importance of each endangered species.

This painting features the Florida Key Deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium), which is an endangered species that can be found only in the Florida Keys. These rare mammals were listed as endangered in 1967, at which time the population was discovered to be near extinction. Their decline was largely due to a dramatic rise in human development causing habitat loss, hunting, and poaching to become major issues. Roadkills remain their greatest threat, averaging 70% of their annual mortality.

Due to the establishment of the National Key Deer Refuge, their population was able to bounce back to around 800 individuals; however, these small deer remain in considerable danger of extinction due to ever increasing development in the Keys.
